Old Dominion University's campus was shaken Thursday morning when a gunman opened fire in an ROTC classroom, killing one person and wounding two others. The victim who died was Lt. Col. Brandon Shah, according to university President Brian O. Hemphill. The shooting happened during what should have been a routine morning on the Norfolk campus. Three people were struck by gunfire in the military training facility, with Shah tragically losing his life while two others were injured. President Hemphill has released several statements since the incident, paying tribute to Shah and addressing the campus community. The university is working through the aftermath of this devastating event that has left students, faculty, and staff grieving. This tragedy hits close to home for many in our region, as ODU serves students from across Coastal Virginia and North Carolina, including some from right here in the Outer Banks. The campus community continues to process this shocking violence that disrupted what started as an ordinary Thursday morning.
